RSSF Scholarship Guidelines
RSSF scholarships are for children ages 7 – 17 who want to participate in an after-school “rock band” program, consisting of lessons on guitar, bass, keys, drums or vocals, plus rock band rehearsals. A list of our participating rock music school partners can be found on our website at www.RockSchoolFund.org. If the school that you are interested in does not currently participate in our program, we can contact them to see if they would like to become one of our partners. Just include the school contact information on your application form.
How do I apply?
Complete and submit your application along with a copy of your most recent 1040 tax return summary (2 pages) for proof of household income. If your financial need situation has occurred during the recent calendar year, then in addition to the 1040 Tax Return summary sheets, please provide proof of current income, and a letter of explanation.
Each student must complete the essay portion of the application in their own hand.
A parent must also provide a written description of why they want their child to attend the rock school.
Additionally, we encourage you to submit a video of your child saying a few words about why they’d love to attend rock school, and what music means to them. The video can be uploaded to YouTube and you can send us a link via email to Apply@RockSchoolFund.org. This step is NOT mandatory, though!
Do I qualify for financial aid?
Financial aid is intended for students ages 7 – 17 who cannot otherwise pay for monthly tuition on one instrument (or vocal lessons) plus rock band rehearsals. The amount of assistance is based upon the total household income. The guidelines for financial assistance are as follows:
Annual Household Income of $35,000 or less may receive up to 100% of tuition
$35,000 to $45,000 may receive up to 75% of tuition
$45,000 to $55,000 may receive up to 50% of tuition
$55,000 to $65,000 may receive up to 25% of tuition
If your income is higher than $65,000 per year you may still qualify for a scholarship depending on number of dependents, regional cost of living, or special circumstances. You may write a letter to the committee requesting that those factors are taken into consideration.
Qualified candidates must know:
Students receiving financial aid are expected to attend 100% of lessons and rehearsals except due to illness. Poor attendance may result in termination of financial aid. Candidates must demonstrate commitment to learning to play their instrument and be a contributing member of the student body. They are expected to help out around the school, and to strictly adhere to the code of conduct for the school they attend.
Parents of scholarship students are asked to volunteer up to 6 hours per month at the school, and will be asked to assist with local school fundraisers.
Scholarships will be paid directly to the Rock School on behalf of the student, and the Rock School will provide RSSF with a quarterly report on the student’s progress. A negative report from the Rock School may result in termination of financial aid.
The balance of tuition is due to the Rock School per the terms of their enrollment agreement with the student, but in general, tuition is paid monthly.
Scholarships are typically granted for four (4) month terms – long enough for the student to complete a session of band rehearsals and do a live performance in front of an audience.
How do I renew my financial aid?
Financial aid must be renewed at the end of each term by submitting a new application. If a student leaves the program before their scholarship term is up, and later wishes to reapply, they may do so, but must go through the application process again. The deadlines for applications for 2015 scholarships are:
December 30, 2014
April 20, 2015
August 20, 2015
Application for Financial Aid
To be considered for assistance, please complete the application and attach a copy of the two top sheet summary pages of your most recent 1040 Federal Tax Return. Proof of income for the prior year is required.
If separated or divorced, the non-custodial parent may be asked to also submit their most recent 1040 Federal Tax Return. While recognizing that divorce may create challenging situations, it is expected that all available family resources will be committed to a child’s education, from both the custodial and the non-custodial parents. The Fund will also consider the resources of a step-parent in making an award determination. However, unique or unusual circumstances will be considered. Please include an explanation of any unique financial circumstances in your parent statement.
